ISSUE 1: UNHOMING PEDAGOGIES

 

In this launch Issue of Unhoming Pedagogies, students and staff at the University of Exeter Penryn reflect on moments in their teaching and learning that have been vulnerable, anger-inducing, raw and neglected. Some contributors tell stories that challenge social and racial privilege; others question narratives of educational productivity, institutional excellence, wellbeing, national inheritance and individual achievement.
Now, at the time of publication, protests against racism and police brutality following the murder of George Floyd are taking place across the world, and global responses to the Coronavirus pandemic shake people’s everyday assumptions. The home and workplace are changed, possibly forever. Some suggest education at Penryn is a provocative and hopeful ‘between’ space; that of uncertainly coming-to-know with others, and also an opportunity to fight for the unhoming of privilege. But there are concerns that education remains an economy to be maximised and exploited. In this liminal place, at the bounds of the campus and our known worlds, we play and struggle: norm-bending, risk-taking, unhoming educational certainties.
